STOKE ST MARY, SOMERSET, ENGLAND
STOKE ST MARY HISTORICAL RECORDS
DESCRIPTIONS OF THE VILLAGE -
In 1781 Edmund Rack started his survey of Somerset and its parishes. He did this for the Rev Collinson who wanted to compile a history of Somerset and a description of its parishes.
In 1791 the Rev Collinson produced his book “The History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset”
His descriptions of the villages and Rack’s differ so I have produced both.
Then in 1873.. Edward Jeboult produced his description of Taunton and the villages in the valley of the Tone. A description of Stoke St Mary appears in this book also.
Descriptions of Stoke also appeared in the local newspapers, especially when houses or land were being sold.
